The CHIP (Cultural Heritage Information Presentation) Project

The CHIP project was fundet by the Dutch Science Foundation NWO-CATCH (Continuous Access to Cultural Heritage) program. It was a collaboration between the Technical University Eindhoven, the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the Telematica Institute. CHIP started 2005 and ended 2011.

The goal of the CHIP project was to demonstrate
(i) how novel Semantic Web technologies can be deployed to enrich the Rijksmuseum vocabularies and providing semantic browsing, searching and semantic recommendations; and
(ii) how personalization and user modeling techniques can be explored to enhance users’ experiences both on the museum Web site and in the physical museum space.

Currently, the demonstrator hosted four thesauri, namely the three Getty Vocabularies (ULAN, AAT, TGN) and the subject classification Iconclass. They used mappings to IconClass provided by STITCH project and the Getty thesauri conversion from their original XML format into an RDF/OWL representation done by MultimediaN E-culture project.

Based on the semantically-enriched data model,  they have implemented three different components/tools in the CHIP demonstrator: Artwork Recommender, web-based virtual Tour Wizard and PDA-based Mobile Tour.
(i) Artwork Recommender. a Web-based rating dialog for artworks/topics to build a user profile, based on semantics-driven recommendations.
(ii) Tour Wizard. a Web-based tool using the user pro le to generate (semi)automatically personalization virtual museum tours for each user.
(iii) Mobile Tour. a PDA-based tool to map virtual tours into the physical museum space with constraints; to give guidance to users and to synchronize the user profile on the web and in the PDA.

Viel Spass beim Ausprobieren!

Google Art Project

On the 1st February 2011 Google launched the Art Project.

What is the Art Project?

The Art Project is "[a] unique collaboration with some of the world’s most acclaimed art museums to enable people to discover and view more than a thousand artworks online in extraordinary detail.
  • Explore museums with Street View technology: virtually move around the museum’s galleries, selecting works of art that interest you, navigate though interactive floor plans and learn more about the museum and you explore.
  • Artwork View: discover featured artworks at high resolution and use the custom viewer to zoom into paintings. Expanding the info panel allows you to read more about an artwork, find more works by that artist and watch related YouTube videos.
  • Create your own collection: the ‘Create an Artwork Collection’ feature allows you to save specific views of any of the 1000+ artworks and build your own personalised collection. Comments can be added to each painting and the whole collection can then be shared with friends and family." [Art Project
The following museums are included in the project:
  • Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin - Germany
  • Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian, Washington DC - USA
  • The Frick Collection, NYC - USA
  • Gemäldegalerie, Berlin - Germany
  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC - USA
  • MoMA, The Museum of Modern Art, NYC - USA
  • Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid - Spain
  • Museo Thyssen - Bornemisza, Madrid - Spain
  • Museum Kampa, Prague - Czech Republic
  • National Gallery, London - UK
  • Palace of Versailles - France
  • Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam - The Netherlands
  • The State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg - Russia
  • State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow - Russia
  • Tate Britain, London - UK
  • Uffizi Gallery, Florence - Italy
  • Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam - The Netherlands

How does it work?

Select a museum from the homepage. Chose ‘Explore the museum’ or ‘View Artwork’. Once you are in the main site use the drop-down menus or the side info bar to navigate between artworks and museums. Finally create and share your own collections online.

I've tried it - it's incredible!

Project - The Question

"The Question is a collaborative and immersive theatre project that explores haptic technology in relation to navigation, perception and knowledge. Currently in a research and development phase, which culminates in a showing in June 2010 at BAC (Battersea Arts Centre), The Question is a collaboration between Extant (the UK’s only professional performing arts company of visually impaired artists), BAC (a space for cutting-edge theatre), the Computing Department of The Open University and specialists Adam Spiers, Paul O’Dowd and David McGoran.
This innovative collaboration between engineers, artists and academics invites participants to explore a tactile and audio environment in the pitch dark.  Audience members will be guided by a haptic device, which uses robotics technology and infrared sensors to change its form in response to their journey through the installation.
The Question focuses on the senses of touch and hearing, and locates the drama of the narrative in the body of each participant.  The story is a fragmented recounting of an abstract blind character, struggling with scientific, philosophical and cultural questions of sensory translation, knowledge and the ultimate impact of these on individual identity." Mobile Augmented Reality Quest (MARQ) 2005-2007

"Mobile Augmented Reality Quest aims at developing an electronic tour guide for museums based on a self-contained, inexpensive PDA, that delivers a fully interactive 3D Augmented Reality (AR) to a group of visitors.  The new PDA-based approach introduces very low costs per device and high scalability which allows for the first time the realization of applications for many concurrent users as required for an appealing museum installation.
Visitors use a mobile, hand-held, personal guide showing a 3D Augmented Reality image of the surrounding that combines real and virtual elements. Real exhibits in the museum are augmented by their virtual counterpart. The guide knows the position of its user and provides context relevant information. The guide thus becomes a kind of "magic lens" capable of visualising the otherwise hidden virtual objects. By looking at the guide's display, visitors see visualizations and animations superimposed onto real exhibits. The guide displays multimedia content, but also acts as an intelligent assistant - the modern day replacement for a guide book.
A massive multi-user communication system is built for interaction between groups of visitors, in particular multi-user location based games. Our previous work on multi-user AR has concentrated on fully synchronous collaboration, using same-time and same-place distribution of information. In this new approach, we are extending the communication to include different-place and different-time sharing of information, so that a number of new collaborative interactions are enabled, for example sharing "collected items" between separated users, or "guided tour replay" at a different time.
The AR tour is delivered in the form of a team-oriented game. An arbitrary number of teams of visitors (target age 12-16) are cast into the role of investigators trying to solve a number of puzzles to solve that involve finding specific exhibits in the museum and manipulating the 3D cyberspace that surrounds the exhibit. Successful completion of a puzzle leads to the revelation of another part of the story. An interesting aspect of our project is also that it will for the first time involve the creation of massive amounts of professional and didactically relevant content for a mobile AR application."

[BMUKK, Newsletter Kunst | Kultur - 1/10]
