NFC at the Museum of London

Do you know the mobile phone technology NFC at the Museum of London?

The Museum informs: "NFC (Near Field Communication) is a new mobile phone technology which allows users to share information with a simple tap of a device. Working with Nokia, we've introduced NFC to both our venues, and with an increasing number of NFC enabled handsets available in the UK, we're excited to be among the first public organisations to use tomorrow's technology today." NMC Horizon Report: 2011 Museum Edition

Abbildung: NMC
Yesterday I recieved the message that the 2011 Museum Edition Horizon Report is out. Right away, I took a look at it and wrote this short description.

This report “is a coproduction with the Marcus Institute for Digital Education in the Arts (MIDEA), and examines emerging technologies for their potential impact on and use in education and interpretation within the museum environment.” [NMC] “The technologies featured in each edition of the NMC Horizon Report are embedded within a contemporary context that reflects the realities of the time, both in the sphere of museum education and in the world at large.” [Johnson et al. 2011, p. 4] The consortium identifies six key trends that were currently affecting the practice of museum education and interpretation.

Article: A Visitor’s Guide in an Active Museum: Presentations, Communications, and Reflection

Abstract
Technology can play a crucial role in supporting museum visitors and enhancing their overall museum visit experiences. Visitors coming to a museum do not want to be overloaded with information, but to receive the relevant information, learn, and have an overall interesting experience. To serve this goal, a user-friendly and flexible system is needed. The design of such a system poses several challenges that need to be addressed in parallel. The user interface should be intuitive and let the visitors focus on the exhibits, not on the technology. Content and delivery must provide relevant information and at the same time allow visitors to get the level of detail and the perspectives in which they are interested. Personalization may play a key role in providing relevant information to individuals. Yet, since visitors tend to visit the museum in small groups, technology should also contribute to and facilitate during-the-visit communication or post-visit group interaction. The PIL project applied at the Hecht museum extended the research results of the PEACH project and tried to address all of these considerations. Evaluation involving users substantiated several aspects of the design.

Blick ins Buch

Buch: Multimedia in Museen

Schulze, Claudia (2001).

[Text: Buchcover]

An Augmented Reality Museum Guide

Abstract

Recent years have seen advances in many enabling Augmented Reality technologies. Furthermore, much research has been carried out on how Augmented Reality can be used to enhance existing applications. This paper describes our experiences with an AR-museum guide that combines some of the latest technologies. Amongst other technologies, markerless tracking, hybrid tracking, and an Ultra-Mobile-PC were used. Like existing audio guides, the AR-guide can be used by any museum visitor, during a six-month exhibition on Islamic art. We provide a detailed description of the museum’s motivation for using AR, of our experiences in developing the system, and the initial results of user surveys. Taking this information into account, we can derive possible system improvements.
