NMC Horizon Report: 2011 Museum Edition

Yesterday I recieved the message that the 2011 Museum Edition Horizon Report is out. Right away, I took a look at it and wrote this short description.

This report “is a coproduction with the Marcus Institute for Digital Education in the Arts (MIDEA), and examines emerging technologies for their potential impact on and use in education and interpretation within the museum environment.” [NMC] “The technologies featured in each edition of the NMC Horizon Report are embedded within a contemporary context that reflects the realities of the time, both in the sphere of museum education and in the world at large.” [Johnson et al. 2011, p. 4] The consortium identifies six key trends that were currently affecting the practice of museum education and interpretation.

2011 Horizon Report

"The annual Horizon Report describes the continuing work of the NMC’s Horizon Project, a research-oriented effort that seeks to identify and describe emerging technologies likely to have considerable impact on teaching, learning, and creative expression within higher education." [nmc]



"In each edition of the Horizon Report, six emerging technologies or practices are described that are likely to enter mainstream use on campuses within three adoption horizons spread over the next one to five years. Each report also presents critical trends and challenges that will affect teaching and learning over the same time frame." [Oscar Retterer]

For the period 2011 through 2015 the following four trends as key drivers of technology adoptions were identified:

• "The abundance of resources and relationships made easily accessible via the Internet is increasingly challenging us to revisit our roles as educators in sense-making, coaching, and credentialing.
• People expect to be able to work, learn, and study whenever and wherever they want to.
• The world of work is increasingly collaborative, giving rise to reflection about the way student projects are structured.
• The technologies we use are increasingly cloud-based, and our notions of IT support are decentralized."
